Think of this as a contemporary equivalent to ‘Count of Monte Cristo’. In fact there’s even a wink to that story in the movie, but while both can be compared for their similar themes at times, ‘Old Boy’ is its own mystery and revenge epic, not a remake or copy of any kind. I use the word ‘epic’ to describe this film because that is how it feels. While the story and stakes are very personal, it is what gives this movie its impact. It is extremely shocking and violent, but not in a way that’s distasteful. Still, this is gritty and Post-Noir at its best, it is well worth watching it even if you might cringe more than once. Also, look forward to one of the best action scenes ever filmed, done in one single and impressive long take without cuts. Just know from the start that it is a tough movie to watch at times.
