I refuse to give any spoilers for this movie. In a way, its trailer already reveals too many awesome scenes, so I’ll recommend you avoid the trailer and just take my word for it… If you’re a fan of horror movies and/or dark comedies, you MUST see this movie!
It’s hard to comment on it without spoiling anything, but let’s just say it grabs genre conventions and takes them for a hilarious spin.
When I saw it at the Fantasia Film Festival in 2010, everyone present was roaring with laughter from beginning to end. Every friend I’ve shown it to since it came out on DVD has loved it.
Plus it helps that the two stars, Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine, do a great job portraying the characters. They play them with a straight face, no winks at the camera or breaking the fourth wall, no exaggerating their acting as if the characters knew they’re in a comedy. And you know what? I came to care about these characters before the movie was over. What’s more, these guys were present with writer & director Eli Craig at the Fantasia screening, did a Q&A after the movie and then sat down to sign autographs. They were clearly backing up the project and along with Mr Craig they entertained the audience with great stories of the filming.
I actually went to see this movie with my mother and step-father (which just proves how cool my mom and her husband are). When Alan Tudyk saw my mother show up to get her movie ticket signed, he seemed surprised to see her at first (she doesn’t exactly look like the movie’s target audience), then asked her if she had enjoyed the movie with honest interest. Since then I have a very high opinion of Mr. Tudyk. Obviously he’s done great jobs in everything I’ve seen him in, but being nice to my mom will rate you high in my esteem.
