The Tenth Doctor is my favorite. When Whovians ask themselves which Doctor they would like to travel with, I always go with that one. I’ve always said that I’m really happy with Matt Smith’s portrayal of the Doctor, but in a perfect world, Tennant would have stayed over for one more season under Steven Moffat before Smith took over. But that’s just because as much as I liked Russel T. Davies as a showrunner, I’m a bigger fan of Moffat.
That’s actually my only reason to have wanted Tennant to stay for one more year, because then I would have had a full season of my favorite showrunner and favorite Doctor at the same time! It’s okay though, the show is doing great and I really enjoy the Eleventh Doctor. In fact I wouldn’t have wanted Tennant to stay longer if that meant we would never have had Matt Smith take over the role afterwards. I think once a Doctor has passed the torch, it’s not about how many seasons/series he did, it’s about the quality of the work he did. Eccleston’s Ninth Doctor was only around for Series One!
And yet, a lot of people seem to be having trouble getting over the Tenth Doctor. They seem to have given up on the show because Tennant is no longer there, and that’s honestly their own business, I’m not gonna judge. What will make me a bit more annoyed however, is when they say the show stopped being good after Tennant left.
Now, some people might mention the show stopped being good after Moffat took over. I completely disagree with that on so many levels, but that is another discussion than the one I’m having right now. At least when someone mentions that, I do realize they’re really talking about which showrunner and type of show they prefer. So while I might love Moffat’s run on Doctor Who, I have no trouble accepting others might prefer Russel T. Davies’ style.
No, the ones I’m addressing with this article are those who honestly are just whining about David Tennant not being there anymore and who are not giving the show a chance because of that, whether they realize it or not. I often see comments online from these people that just confirm they’re not even watching the show because their claims completely contradict what’s actually happening in the show. And don’t get me wrong, if someone is honest and fair, I’ll have no problem with them. Both showrunners have their strengths and weaknesses and maybe some might not like the new style. And if someone outright tells me “I’ve stopped watching because I can’t see anyone but Tennant as the Doctor.” well that’s their right. At least they’re honest about it and I’ve got no quarrel with them, same as those who genuinely preferred the Davies era.
But either way, I’ve got one thing to say to those who are still crying over Tennant’s departure from years ago: GET OVER IT! Seriously, he was my favorite Doctor too, but either learn to enjoy the show despite his departure or move on and stop crying! Doctor Who existed long before Tennant showed up and will continue to exist long after ‘The End of Time’!
With all that said, if you ask me, be ready to see Tennant again in the show. The 50th anniversary of Doctor Who is coming in 2013 and Moffat has said “The plans are quite extensive (…) we will hit that year very, very hard indeed.”
This and some other comments here and there lead me to believe that the Tenth Doctor might make an appearance in 2013… Or the Meta-Crisis Doctor might. That’s the thing, I honestly would prefer that the actual Tenth Doctor would show up. (Nothing personal, Meta-Crisis Doctor…) I think the Meta-Crisis Doctor is a great and elegant solution for if they want to bring Tennant back to the show many years from now to meet whoever the current Doctor at that time will be, since Meta-Crisis Doctor ages like a human. They wouldn’t need to come up with any awkwardly explained reason for why Tennant’s Doctor looks older than he was the moment when he regenerated. BUT if they want to bring back Rose, which they possibly might, it would be more logical to bring the Meta-Crisis Doctor who is currently with her in that alternate reality.
Personally, I don’t care much for Rose and have no desire to see her again. It won’t bother me if we see her again, don’t get me wrong, I just won’t care. But a lot of fans still love that character so it might be a logical move from Moffat. To tell the truth, I don’t mind that much if Rose and the Meta-Crisis Doctor do show up, I just want to see the actual Tenth Doctor again.
Ah-ha, now you might remind me I just told everyone to get over Ten. And I did, because many people are judging the current show simply based on the fact that Tennant is no longer in it. But it doesn’t mean it wouldn’t make me happy to see him again.
So anyway, either with the genuine Tenth Doctor, with the Meta-Crisis Doctor, or possibly both at the same time, I think it’d be amazing to see Tennant and Smith interacting in the same scenes. Can you imagine the exchanges, the wit, the banter, the comedy, the drama? The potential of seeing these two incarnations and actors together is amazing!
